A Study of Gallows on Woods

1992

Mixed media on wood slats

Böröcz made this series of drawings on old, stained and dirty wood slats. Wood, Böröcz's favorite material, is the material for an actual gallows. When Hungarian film director, Peter Gothar, made a film in the 1990's about Böröcz's monumental sculpture installation "The Hanged", he placed and filmed the wood sculptures on a tree in Washington Square, in Manhattan, near the one that was used for capitol punishment in NYC in the 18th century. In this part of the movie we see not only the regular lively human activites in the park in contrast with the absurdity of the still, unmoving hanged sculptures, but we see this old oak tree.
